The main reason people are most often unclear about the issue is because of the fact which they associate the multilevel model with what is known as a pyramid or 'Ponzi Scheme'.
First off, 'Ponzi Schemes' are illegal in the US and most other countries. Ponzi, or pyramid schemes are only kept alive by paying existing investors with money from 'new' investors. They are based on shifting 'existing' resources in one who has just entered as being an investor to one who had been an element of the process. New and existing investors usually do not receive any service or product for investment and definately will only join for the commitment of money paid by future investors.

When any legit investment is made, the money invested can be used to generate some kind of value for the investor. A company uses the money to make a valuable service or product to offer for the public. It pays the investor back from the profits that it makes from the sale if the company is successful in it's goal.
To my knowledge (and the FTC) there are no MLM companies which do not offer some kind of services or products to it's home business investors. And to my knowledge there are no businesses that require customers to distribute their goods. They develop a significant client base that see value in the goods and services offered. Transforming into a distributor is a simple question of choice.
There are several that complain about MLM firms that require reps to purchase the product or service offered. Why would a rep wish to distribute a service or product they did not believe in enough to spend money on? After all, ultimately it's 'their' business?
Unfortunately, most people which make the 'pyramid scheme' claims are just not business minded and can never be aware of the MLM model. They will almost always be blind for the great opportunity it provides people of average way to create real wealth in their lives.
Don't be blind to the awesome power of multi-level marketing and just how positive it could be for the family and finances.
